Warren Bandzmer is the proprietor of Spectrum Photo. He has worked in the world of visual media for the last 30 years in many roles: commercial videographer / photographer, film lighting, film school instructor, and a university AV Operations Manager.

As well as colour and black and white images, Spectrum photo specializes in infrared photo capture and processing. Photos are taken with a camera that is able to see infrared energy. We cannot see infrared with our eyes, but we feel it in the form of heat. The wavelength that these photos are captured at, 650 nanometers, has a small proportion of “in-band” visible light as well. The resulting captures are photos that have “enhanced colour” also called “false colour”.

Infrared or “IR” photography has been around since the early film camera days. It was made popular by some recording artists in the 1960’s – Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa – on their record album covers. Now that digital cameras are mainstream, IR images can be captured either by using special lens filters or by converting the camera so it can see infrared without filters. There is a different look to digital IR images compared to the ones shot on film. However, those differences can be largely equalized with digital post production techniques.

Many of Spectrum Photo’s infrared images were taken in the US Southwest. Infrared capture can accentuate emotional components of scenes with old dilapidated structures or interesting vegetation. IR photos can be processed in many different ways, including black and white and some of the colour techniques used in standard photographs.
